The Sri Maha Bodhi Viharaya at Bahirawakanda is a very attractive and hilly place in the Kandy Town. The monastery was started in 1972 ,the founder was the ven.Ampitiye Dammarama Thero. He disaided to build the big buddha's statue and started to build it with the peoples donations in year 1972 he could finsh the construction of the budda's statue and open on 1 st of january 1993 precident premadasa was opend

Take a tuk tuk ride to the Temple, just 1 km away from the Kandy city.So when you get to the top of the temple you will get a remarkable view of Kandy city,the massive mountain line connected with each other and also the inside of the Bogambara Prison.
Its just 2 km from the temple of the Sacred tooth relic.
There are many beleifs and legends related to this mountain where the Bahirawakanda temple is located.Name “ Bahirawa Kanda ”means the gnome mountain.
